: Edward Steichen (1879-1973)

nato in Lussemburgo nel 1879 e cresciuto negli U.S.A. sin dal 1880, è tra i più grandi fotografi le cui opere sono esposte nei più importanti musei del mondo. Si avvicinò da giovane all'arte della pittura ed all'inizio del secolo ebbe modo di conoscere a New York Alfred Stieglitz e ne divenne subito grande amico. Durante la prima guerra mondiale fu inviato sul fronte francese a dirigere il settore servizi fotografici per l'esercito U.S.A. L'esperienza della guerra e le straordinarie immagini che riportò lo spinsero a dedicarsi a tempo pieno alla fotografia con l'ausilio dell'amico ed insuperabile maestro Stieglitz. Realizzò importanti servizi fotografici per alcuni Magazine americani e durante la seconda guerra mondiale fu nominato Capo dei Servizi Fotografici della Marina statunitense. Fu in seguito incaricato a dirigere la Sezione Fotografica del MoMA di New York.

 

Born in 1879, in Luxembourg, Steichen grew up in America. Since the 1880’s and amongst one of the great photographers, his work is exhibited in the most important museums of the world. Since of an early age he became fond of painting and at the beginning of the century met in New York Alfred Stieglitz and soon became a good friend. During the First World War, he was invited to the French front to lead the photographic service of the USA army. The experience of the war and the extraordinary images led the spinster to dedicate all of his time to photography with the support of his friend and unbeatable teacher Stieglitz. He carried out important photographic services for some US magazines and during the Second World war, he was assigned the post of Head of photography for the US marines. He was following this, given the opportunity to manage The Photographic Section of Moma, New York.
